Restoration And Conservation Of Frames & Gold Leaf

We Restore Picture Frames of all types; Antique and Modern, Wood, Gesso, Gold & Silver Leaf, Faux Finish, Carved.

Our frame and gold leaf restoration department restores and preserves original frames with the same care and attention to detail as the paintings they surround. We restore frames of all kinds from the simplest wooden styles to the most ornate carved gilt designs.

Frame restoration services include cleaning, reversing of old repairs and over paint, stabilization of corners and decorations, fabrication of missing pieces or ornamentation, color-matched in-painting, toning and gilding in either true gold leaf or composition metal leaf.

Original Frames - Restore Or Replace?

An original frame is an important addition to any work of art. Wear on a frame can help to establish its history, and is often integral to the overall value of the painting. Before replacing any antique frame, it is important to have its condition evaluated by a professional conservator. If restoration is not possible, you may want to consider replacing it with a quality period reproduction frame.

When reframing a painting, choose a frame style that is consistent with the period and compatible with the key elements of color and composition.

Framing Of Your Paintings

Ideally a painting should be held in the frame with metal offset clips that are attached to the frame with screws. Brass mending plates can be bent and adjusted so there is light pressure on the back of the stretcher or strainer. Sometimes nails are used to frame paintings, but nails can rust, fall out, or protrude through the canvas. Ask the framer or conservator to pad the rabbet (the part of the frame that touches the face of the painting) with felt or another suitable material to protect the image.

Storing Your Collection

Paintings and frames should never be stored in damp areas such as basements, nor should they be left in attics where temperatures can greatly fluctuate. Ideally they should be hung on a wall even when in storage, but they may be stored vertically with stiff boards protecting the front and back of each painting.

Framing

In addition to our art restoration and conservation services we offer custom picture framing with a comprehensive selection of period and contemporary frames.

“It’s rare to find art conservators, with fine art expertise that extends to its framing, which is critical for the attractive presentation and critical preservation of art. Because of QC FINE ARTS deep awareness of the fragility and delicateness of fine art, we know how to appropriately handle the artwork that’s been entrusted to us, but also how to use the most beautiful and suitable materials and methods for framing.”
